Academic tutoring

The tutors at Austin Learning Center have years of experience working with students at every level on a wide range of subjects. We create individualized instructional goals for each student and believe that one-on-one instruction with a well-matched, professional, compassionate tutor is invaluable to a student's confidence and success. Whether the student needs a little extra guidance to get the most out of her English class, is feeling lost in chemistry, or wants to advance to an even higher conceptual understanding in AP calculus, Austin Learning Center's tutors meet the needs of the student.

Our overall goal for academic tutoring is to be a valuable resource to each student we work with by becoming an extension of their classroom experience. We attempt to supplement their education by addressing short term needs that help them succeed from test to test while connecting concepts to underlining principles that lead to long-term understanding. In an academic tutoring session, the tutors do not use prescribed curricula. Instead, tutoring is centered on each student's strengths and weaknesses in the subject(s) they are studying. Tutors work with the same materials (books, workbooks) that are used in the classroom, and supplemental materials are engaged when appropriate to remediate or enrich the learning process. If underlying skills need to be reinforced, the tutor is sure to fill in those gaps before moving on. If a student has broader questions about the material, the tutor helps make advanced connections. This leads to an increase in test scores, confidence, and motivation as well as independence and future success.

All of our tutors are available to collaborate with parents and school personnel and to hold conferences to discuss a student's progress. Our students come from a variety of schools (please see our FAQ's for a complete list), and we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with classroom teachers. We respect their work and attempt to mirror their goals so that the student receives a single, unified message in a variety of presentations. Through our innovative online reporting program, parents are able to read summaries of their child's tutoring sessions and recommendations for independent study and follow-up work, posted the same day the session takes place. These summaries are also made available to educators with parent permission.

Tutoring is available in the afternoons and evenings Monday-Thursday and all day Sunday at our convenient location on Bee Caves Road. We also offer on-campus tutoring during the school day if a student has a study hall or a break between classes (with prior permission from the school) and, in some cases, in-home tutoring.

We currently offer tutoring services in all primary and secondary school subjects, including all Advanced Placement courses, as well as tutoring for college and university students. Our tutors are familiar with the curricula in Austin's public and private schools and universities. Our staff will also suggest diagnostic testing when appropriate so that we can best understand the challenges your child may be facing.
