FAQs

What is a typical ALC student?
The students at ALC are as diverse as the programs we offer. We serve students who are struggling to succeed in their coursework as well as those who are ranked at the very top of their class and enrolled in the most challenging courses. Our students participate in gifted and talented programs, 504 and special education, and a broad range of extracurricular activities. We are flexibile to each student's individual needs and schedules. Our tutors have worked with valedictorians at competitive schools and have helped students in emergency academic situations such as those in danger of retention. Whatever the need, our environment is one where everyone is welcomed, valued, and appreciated. Because our students have various tutoring goals, we meet every child where they are and work to bring out the personal best in each and every one of them.
What are your fees?
Tutoring varies for the type of service and are competitive with market rates. Please call our office for details.
Do you offer group tutoring?
While our specialty is one-on-one tutoring, we occasionally have students who are interested in small group tutoring. Please contact us with your request, and we will work to accommodate your small group. We occasionally offer workshops and small classes.
How do you match students with their tutor?
The right fit between student and tutor is a key to a successful tutoring relationship. Once a new student's needs are evaluated a match is made. We monitor this fit to make sure that each student is getting the most out of his or her sessions.
What is the atmosphere at the center?
From the moment our students enter our building we want them to feel welcome and comfortable. Our vibe is relaxed, yet we are serious about our goals. Students are encouraged to come as they are, be themselves, and make themselves at home. The tutors and students work in a collaborative way, and it isn't uncommon to see one student asking a classmate about an upcoming assignment or sharing a test review. Tutors also share ideas with one another and their students. At ALC, we are a team.
My child is doing great! Could he or she benefit from tutoring?
We work with many students who are at the top of their class and are excelling in advanced courses. We have tutored national merit scholars and valedictorians from Austin's top high schools as well as college students with near 4.0 grade point averages. Often, these students benefit from a deeper conceptual understanding of the material and the opportunity to make broad connections across the curriculum. Whatever the goal may be, all types of learners benefit from the services provided at Austin Learning Center.
Can you work with my child's learning difference?
At Austin Learning Center our team is experienced in working with a broad range of learning differences including: ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, executive function, auditory processing, math anxiety, test anxiety, and others. We will review any prior educational testing and will collaborate with teachers to help guide the tutoring process. Our learning specialist on staff provides support as needed to tutors who work with students with learning issues in the tutoring setting. In our experience, one-on-one tutoring provides phenomenal benefit to a child who struggles in a traditional classroom setting and is a valuable supplement to the learning process. When necessary, Austin Learning Center will refer parents to specialists and psychiatrists if a particular learning challenge cannot be met by our team.

Can I schedule appointments online?
We have made a conscientious decision to have our office staff schedule every appointment at our center. Our staff understands the strengths of our tutoring staff and can best match the student with a tutor. For your convenience, you can request appointments via phone call or email.
Is it too late to help myself or my child?
Many parents and students have come to us when they were at the end of their rope, often feeling a large amount of stress and pressure. We realize that it is difficult for students to succeed in a competitive and demanding world. We have been able to take the burden from these parents and to help students once again regain control of their studies. We are sensitive to the needs of students who have experienced a loss or illness, who are in danger of failing, who struggle with various learning differences and/or challenges, or who are suffering from significant academic-related stress. At even what may seem like the 11th hour, ALC can step in to get a student back on course.
